I ADORED this issue. And not just because Benjamin Deeds came out like it ain’t no thing (and hopefully everyone else will treat it like Emma did -“and?”). This was the first time I felt that Bendis meshed with the X-Men. This will be the issue people look back on and say “ok, this is when he got it.” It was the first time (for me anyway) when it gelled, flowed, whatever.
Do I still have issues with his characterizations? Yep. Don’t even get me started on the Cuckoos or whoever those girls are. Did I cringe when Emma named him “Morph”? Yes. That’s not even a good description of what he does.
(Now, “Sympatico" would be an AWESOME code name. You hear that, Bendis?)
This was the issue when Bendis made the X-Men his own. Now that Battle of the Atom is over (and that ended up being kind of a fizzle-y excuse for limited edition action figures), we’re going to need more issues like this one. And start to tie up some of those plotlines. In this book. Where did Mystique stash Dazzler? Who was that mysterious person from the old New Avengers cover who’s playin’ evil mastermind? Get Goldballs a better code name. Oh man, Tempus (she should be Tempo, isn’t gold helmet Tempo dead?), Triage, Hijack, (jury still out on) Morph, GOLDBALLS. I know it’s a joke but it’s going to stick. Please give him “Sphere" or…or…"Ballpit”? Oh dear.
Anyway, good job, X-Guys. This was a winner.
Editor’s note - Just remembered - The Trial of Jean Grey. *sigh*
